Selecting fabrics is one of my favorite parts of designing a space. With so many beautiful options, I feel like a kid in a candy store every time I walk into a fabric warehouse. Designing soft goods is where you can really show off your personality and have a little fun! Here are a few things I like to consider when choosing fabrics:
1. CHOOSE TWO COLORS AND A NEUTRAL
Start with two colors that work well in your space. It helps if these colors are already present in your larger pieces, like rugs or accent chairs. For example, below I’ve chosen a coastal palette with a fresh combination of aqua, sand and ivory.

2. CHOOSE A FEW DIFFERENT PATTERNS
Stick with the two colors you picked in Step 1. Here are some fun pattern types to consider: floral, stripes, plaid, geometric, checks, toile, chevron, or animal print. I like to keep my patterns within the same “vibe” or genre—the ones below are all relaxed and casual.

3. CHOOSE AT LEAST ONE FABRIC THAT INCLUDES ALL THREE OF YOUR COLORS
This fabric helps tie everything together. Use it a few times around the room, along with your other patterns. For instance, it could be featured on throw pillows and drapery panels.

4. VARY THE SCALE OF YOUR PATTERNS
I like to include one small pattern or solid, one large-scale pattern and one medium-scale pattern. Mixing scales creates balance and keeps the space from feeling too busy or too flat.

5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO THROW IN A WILD CARD
Depending on how many upholstered pieces, cushions, or window treatments you have in a room, it can be fun to add in a fun texture like a fluffy flokati, metallic, or embroidered textile. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to mix it up! Focus first on color, then on scale. If you have two bold patterns that you love—and they share the right colors—they just might work beautifully together.
