When it comes to decorating, the first step might surprise you: subtract! Before adding new furniture or choosing colors, it’s essential to clear the clutter and evaluate what’s truly important. Check out our “Keep, Donate, Toss” method. It’s a great way to begin refreshing your space by evaluating what you truly need and love.
Step 1: GATHER EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM
Start by assessing everything in your room. Empty shelves, drawers, and closets, and place all items in one area just outside the space. Yes, it might look chaotic for a while, but this step helps you see everything clearly.
Step 2: SORT INTO THREE PILES
Next, sort everything into three categories: Keep, Sell/Donate, and Toss. Here’s how to break it down:
Keep:
These are the items you genuinely love and use. They either serve a functional purpose or visually enhance the room’s design. When deciding what to keep, try applying the “5-second rule.” This will help you make decisions quickly. Simply pick up each item, and within 5 or 10 seconds, decide whether to keep or discard it. If you can immediately think of a place for the item, it’s a keeper. If you’re struggling to decide, it might be time to let it go.
If you’re still unsure about some items, try the “limbo method.” Remove the item from the room and store them in a closet or box for a predetermined time—say, 3 to 6 months. If you haven’t used it by then, donate or toss it.
Sell/Donate:
These are items you no longer need but still have value. Whether it’s unused furniture or decor, selling or donating these items can benefit someone else.
Toss:
These are items that are broken, worn out, or no longer useful—old candles, ripped cushions, or chipped mugs. They contribute to visual clutter and should be discarded.
