How to decorate your ceiling and make your space sing

Fifth wall magic: Ceiling treatments are a fantastic way to make your space stand out and enhance the feeling of cozy well-being—often referred to as hygge (a trending Danish word.) They can also elevate the luxury factor of your home, adding that over-the-top element that inevitably prompts exclamations of “Wow.”

COFFERED CEILINGS
Originally developed by the Romans to lighten the load of stone ceilings, modern coffered ceilings are an excellent way to create the illusion of height or conceal imperfections. Aesthetically, they draw the eye upward, making a room feel more expansive and potentially increasing the value of a home.

CEILING BEAMS
Adding beams is another great way to make a room feel larger and taller by drawing the eye upward. They create a coziness when done in natural wood, and a sleekness when painted in a graphic color.

WOOD PLANKING
Besides the functional benefits, such as improved acoustics and insulation, adding wood planks to the ceiling is a beautiful way to introduce the warmth of this natural material. It’s well known that incorporating natural elements into interior design fosters a sense of calm and connection with the outdoors.

WALLPAPER
In spaces that can handle a unique sense of surprise, adding a wallpapered ceiling is a wonderful way to delight the senses. As with the other ceiling treatments, it draws the eye upward to create a feeling of height and more space. At the same time, it can make a room design more unified by avoiding the typical big white rectangle overhead. It’s a sense of immersion that excites the senses.

START WITH PAINT
One of the least expensive ways to try this look is to simply paint the ceiling in a bold color. When paired with contrasting crown molding, it adds drama to a room for all the reasons mentioned previously – drawing the eye upward and moving it around the room.

In this powder room design, the ceiling is painted Sherwin Williams Halcyon Green to continue the color scheme initiated with the wallpaper. Down below, the vanity cabinet is painted the same color, adding a top-to-bottom cohesiveness to the design. Design and photo by HeartSing Home Decorating.
