Scary Design Myths That May Be Holding You Back

Design rules can be wonderful guides, but being too rigid about them can turn into myths that haunt your creativity. When you give yourself permission to bend the “rules,” you’ll discover more freedom, comfort, and joy in your own home.

MYTH 1: “Small rooms must stay light and minimal.”
Truth: Small doesn’t have to mean boring! A powder room, hallway, or reading nook can be the perfect spot to go bold. Think jewel-box walls, oversized art, or a moody wallpaper that brings instant personality.

Our tiny powder room design packs a punch with a historic wallpaper pattern on a deep brown backround.

MYTH 2: “Trends should lead the way.”
Truth: Forget chasing the trend report—your lifestyle is the star. Durable finishes, comfy seating, and lighting at three levels (ceiling, task, and ambient) create spaces that actually support the way you live. Then, sprinkle in a few trendier accents—pillows, art, a playful side chair—that are easy to swap when you’re ready for a fresh twist.

Pillows and accessories can change with the trends, but this leather Chesterfield sofa in our living room design is a classic that will stand the test of time.

MYTH 3: “Good design takes forever.”
Truth: Not true! With a focused roadmap, transformation can happen faster than you think. When your floor plan, color palette, and lighting strategy are set from the start, everything else clicks into place. That’s why a one-board, whole-room plan is such a game-changer—it saves time, money, and endless second-guessing.

Dramatic paint and a great symmetrical floor plan offered a quick, impactful change in our client’s home office.

MYTH 4: “Everything has to match.”
Truth: Matching sets are out—harmony is in! Your brain loves rhythm and repetition, not carbon copies. Mix wood tones with metals, linen with leather, matte black with warm oak. Just repeat each element a couple of times and suddenly the whole space feels collected, layered, and uniquely yours.

In our living room designs, we prefer to spice things up with a mix of upholstery fabrics that harmonize rather than match.

MYTH 5: “Accessories are just fluff.”
Truth: The finishing touches are what make a room sing. Artwork, pillows, curiosities, and greenery are not afterthoughts—they’re the layers that add warmth, personality, and flow. Without them, even the best furniture can feel flat and unfinished.

Accessories bring the magic to our lighter-than-air dining room design.
