Change out your microwave vent combo for a stunning upgrade

For decades, the builder default has been to install the ubiquitous microwave/vent combo above the range. While it makes practical sense, the visual is a little bit lackluster. Why not create a focal point by installing a microwave drawer, or moving it to the pantry or a cabinet? Then you have creative freedom to cover a utilitarian vent in a creative way. Here are a few ideas:

MODERN AND UNASSUMING
For an organic modern twist, an unassuming box to match the kitchen island was added along with open shelving. Bonus points for the stone wall.

LEAN INTO THE METAL PRE-MADE VENT
Ready-made vents abound and can be a welcome upgrade to the standard microwave. I love how industrial metal contrasts with the natural wood grain cabinets and organic green color palette. Kudos for the counter-to-ceiling tile laid vertically.

COUNTERTOP, BACKSPLASH, AND VENT IN UNISON
Using countertop material as backsplash is a sleek way to give a kitchen a sense of calm, and here, the same quartz material is used to cover the vent. I love the combination of light wood with black, and the use of open shelving with upper cabinets.

APPLY TEXTURE AND GRANDEUR
If you love the rustic and country house aesthetic, consider using your vent cover as a way to drive home the point. Old beams, stone and vintage brick combine with a diamond backsplash tile to create a stunning focal point. And it’s all set off by a turquoise glazed cabinet finish and ceiling beams.

KEEP THE FLOW OF YOUR CABINET STYLE GOING
Shaker-style cabinets don’t need to be interrupted by the microwave. Here, the vent was hidden by a cover with the same light grey paint and board-and-batten detail.
